Downtown Skating Rink Set to Open December 2nd:

Quincy, MA -- Mayor Thomas P. Koch announced that the City of Quincy will open its outdoor downtown skating rink on Monday, December 2nd. The rink will be open seven days a week from noon to 8 p.m. for community skating. The rink will remain open through the end of February school vacation week. Public skating and skate rentals will be provided without charge again this year.

The rink location has been moved to Dennis Ryan Parkway, across from the courthouse and next to the Kilroy Square parking garage. There is limited on-street parking and plenty of parking available in the Kilroy Square garage.

“We aim to build on last year’s overwhelming success by again providing families a fun, free, outdoor activity right in our downtown”, said Mayor Koch. “I encourage folks to again join in the fun for a skate and spend some time patronizing our downtown businesses. We are always looking for ways to enhance the quality of life in our city and the rink was a huge hit last year. We hope to continue to build upon that success this upcoming winter.”

Skate times can be reserved by Quincy residents during peak weekend hours by visiting QuincyRec.com. It is recommended that Quincy residents set up an account on QuincyRec.com to facilitate the reservation process.

“The downtown skating rink was very popular last year and helps showcase the incredible improvements that have been made throughout Quincy Center,” said Commissioner of Natural Resources Dave Murphy. “I want to thank Mayor Koch for his commitment to this program and for the complete transformation of our downtown. Countless residents, young and old, enjoyed this free activity last winter and we hope to serve even more people this year.”

This year’s rink will be slightly larger than last year’s rink at 106 ’x 56’. This will allow an increase in the amount of people that can skate at any given time. The rink will be staffed by the Department of Natural Resources to ensure safety, order, and quality ice.

Added Mayor Koch, “We are creating a winter wonderland for our residents downtown with music, decorations, and the skating rink. Regardless of your skating skill level, we encourage you to come down and enjoy this wonderful opportunity.”
